Phenomena like solar flares and auroras are direct/indirect consequences of magnetic reconnection in space. These "magnetic reconnection" events abruptly release the magnetic energy, as they change the topology of the magnetic field lines. The physics of magnetic reconnection has long been studied by theories, simulations, and spacecraft observations, however, full kinetic-physics signatures in reconnection have been verified only recently. In this talk, I will overview recent observations of magnetic reconnection in the Earth magnetosphere by NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission, and then I will introduce our results with particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations to support MMS observations. |
