The MITgcm has been designed so as to be extremely flexible, and able to tackle a wide range of geophysical fluid dynamics problems, from small-scale non-hydrostatic turbulence to planetary scale coupled applications. This flexibility is supported by the fact that the model includes much more than a fluid dynamical core, with a representation of sea, ice shelf, carbon cycle, etc and a range of parameterizations. In this lecture, I will review the capabilities of the MITgcm, its specificities, and how it is developed. |
