| Title: | "Listening to Planets: Planetary Seismology and Infrasound" |
| Abstract: | Seismic waves provide a powerful means of probing planetary interiors and surfaces, while acoustic waves and pressure fluctuations in planetary atmospheres offer complementary information about planetary environments. This seminar begins with planetary seismology, with a focus on Mars, and introduces penetrator-based seismic observations and infrasound observations in Antarctica, as well as terrestrial infrasound observations associated with meteoroids and atmospheric reentries of sample return capsules. Building on these observations and technological developments on Earth, acoustic and pressure-wave propagation in the Martian atmosphere and its potential applications to future planetary exploration, including penetrator missions, will also be discussed. Together, seismic and atmospheric waves provide complementary ways of “listening” to planets. |
