"Identifying the influence of galactic cosmic rays on the climate system"

Correlations between solar activity and climate have been found on various time scales ranging from a decade to a few thousand years. Furthermore, recent works have suggested that solar activity may even affect the Earth system on a meteorological time scale. However, the detailed mechanisms are still unknown. Since the variability of total solar irradiance is too small to explain the observed Sun-Climate connection, other possibilities have been investigated, including the effects of solar ultraviolet radiation and the influence of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs). GCRs have been suggested to influence cloud activities by forming cloud condensation nuclei and/or promoting the collisional processes in clouds. In this talk, I present our recent works discussing the possible influence of GCRs on tropical cloud activities. I also discuss the potential subsequent impact on the atmospheric circulation and the sea surface temperatures.
