Title: Challenges of weather/climate simulations on supercomputer Fugaku
Abstract: Meteorology/climate science researchers are old-timer heavy users in high-performance computing and pioneers in data science, such as collecting a large amount of earth observation data every day and using it for prediction simulation. To further improve weather forecasts and climate predictions, we are demanding calculations using higher spatiotemporal resolution and more robust statistical information (= more large ensemble size). For that purpose, it is required to develop applications that can utilize state-of-the-art supercomputers. I will talk about the results of the system-application co-design that is promoted in the Fugaku development project (2014-2021) and also introduce the studies in “Program for Promoting Researches on the Supercomputer Fugaku” (Large Ensemble Atmospheric and Environmental Prediction for Disaster Prevention and Mitigation).
