title: Wavenumber spectra of planetary atmospheres
abstract: A method to study cross-scale coupling in planetary atmospheres is to construct energy spectra from measured winds or temperatures. Boer and Shepherd (1983) and Nastrom and Gage (1985) obtained horizontal wavenumber spectra of the terrestrial atmosphere, and discussed baroclinic energy injection, cascade of energy and enstrophy, Rhines effect to prevent energy cascade, topographic excitation, and gravity wave contribution. Imamura et al. (2007) and Imamura and Kobayashi (2009) studied energy spectra of the Martian atmosphere using MGS TES temperature data and argued that most of the spectral features will be attributed to processes similar to those found in the terrestrial atmosphere.
