| Abstract |
Various long-period (intraseasonal to interseasonal scales) waves in the atmosphere and oceans play an important role in the development and demise of climate variations (MJO/ENSO/IOD) in the tropics. Previous diagnostic theories based on quasi-geostrophic approximation have not been able to deal with connections between mid-latitudes and equatorial regions in a consistent manner. A recent theoretical study has led to a breakthrough in the diagnostic equation for energy fluxes, allowing us to treat all waves in a unified manner regardless of the difference between gravity and planetary waves, and between equatorial and mid-latitude regions (Aiki et al. 2017). This is a powerful tool for tracing the life cycle (development, transfer, and dissipation processes) of wave energy in the atmosphere and oceans without the limitation of latitudinal bands. It allows us not only to visualize and qualitatively understand the transfer routes of wave energy, but also to clarify the most important of each dynamical process through rigorous quantification. In this study, we will present an analytical case study of an ocean model experiment and report on the progress of the 3D formulation for atmospheric analysis and the model results. |
